Over the past 2 nutrition “challenges” some of the biggest results came from the power couple of the Martelle’s. Over the course of a few months, not only did their appearances change dramatically, but they seemed to find a groove with their fitness and nutrition that can help inspire others!
In our nutrition programming we like to focus on healthy maintainable habits. That encompasses everything from sleep, stress, alcohol, stretching and of course moving your body with fitness and fueling your body with the right food choices.
Outwardly, it would appear the Martelle’s are obviously doing something right, so I wanted to get their input on what works for them, so we can share with everyone the “secret” to their #gains!

UP FIRST LIZ!
How much weight have you lost since the first challenge?
22.3# (yes, that .3 matters!)
I actually lost some muscle, but started gaining it back in the second challenge.
What did you learn from these challenges?
Working out in some form every day really boosts my mood and I feel so good afterwards. It doesn’t have to be a full blown wod, some days it’s 30 minutes of yoga or a walk at the park. Even when I don’t feel like doing anything, forcing myself to do it makes me feel good about myself afterwards, like I really accomplished something.
What helped you be so successful?
Planning ahead is my key to success. Whether it be planning meals, making sure there’s good food in the house, or seeing what was on my calendar first thing to make sure I was able to fit in a workout at some point in the day. When going to a friend’s house, I ate ahead of time or would take something with me I could feel good about eating (like a veggie tray or fruit). Doing this with Brandon on board, too, was key as I didn’t have anyone trying to ply me with pizza or alcohol!
Outside of the obvious body composition changes, have you noticed any other changes?
I’ve found I’m not having some of the pain issues I was having before. Yoga is giving me time to decompress and focus on ME and not everything else going on. I’m able to clear my mind and focus on what I need to accomplish afterwards.
Now the tough questions:
Rock or rap? 90’s rap
Dog or cat? Cat (shh don’t tell my dog)
Morning or evening? evening
Book or movie? The book is always better!
Deadlift or squat? Deadlift
Steak or chicken? steak
Comedy or drama? Drama as long as it’s a show and not in real life!
Tom & jerry or scooby do? Tom & Jerry
Wine or whisky? Wine
Murph or Fran? Fran – Murph takes too long!

NOW BRANDONS TURN!
How much weight have you lost since the first challenge?
23 total pounds
I believe I gained 3-4 lbs of muscle.
What did you learn from these challenges?
During both challenges I’ve learned I really don’t eat enough veggies or protein and I remembered that working out is a great stress reliever.
What helped you be so successful?
Liz. If she wasn’t apart of this is I probably wouldn’t have done the challenge or got closer to my goal
Outside of the obvious body composition changes, have you noticed any other changes?
The workouts haven’t gotten easier and the weights haven’t gotten lighter but I’ve learned that workouts don’t have to be heavy and I get more going heavy in a strength session and moderately heavy in the metcon than going super heavy and feeling broke afterwards. Can you explain this sleep thing to me??
