I started my fitness journey because I had dreams of one day running in obstacle course races, 5ks, and being an all-around bad ass. I was tired of sitting on the couch and at the time I couldn’t walk a flight of stairs without getting winded. I knew that something had to change. I had struggled with being overweight my entire life, I couldn’t run or keep up with my friends. I also never thought of myself as athletic, or referred to myself as an athlete and had gym-phobia.
I started at TFA in October of 2016. I had just lost my mom due to a sudden heart attack, and I lost my dad to the same thing 6 years prior. Both were in their early 60’s and I did not want this to be me someday. I had been in a rut with my fitness journey at the time and I had even gained some of the weight I lost back. I found on Facebook that TFA was doing a New You 6 week boot camp challenge and signed up with absolutely no idea what CrossFit was or what I was about to get myself into.
CrossFit and the TFA family helped me get through the toughest time of my life. There is something insanely powerful about a CrossFit family. You could be having the worst day but the moment you walk through those doors, the coaches and the other athletes make you smile and feel right at home. Never before had I experienced such an uplifting and encouraging group of people. They push you and cheer you on to achieve your goals. The coaches at TFA are the most caring and supportive individuals that I have ever met. They don’t just go over a work out and turn you lose, they coach you every step of the way in and out of the gym. Even including nutrition.
Fast forward to today and I’ve lost a total of 50 lbs, countless inches, gone from a size 16 to a size 6. But numbers aside, I have gained so much more. My asthma is in remission, my health all around has improved and I have more energy throughout the day. I have gained so much confidence in myself and have a better outlook on life. In my short time of TFA I’ve managed to reach goals I wouldn’t have even dreamed were possible. The first time that I had climbed a rope, which was my number 1 goal at the time, I felt so empowered and strong. Never before in my life was I able to climb a rope.
Looking forward, TFA has helped me realize that the sky is the limit. I am capable of achieving any goal that I set as long as I work hard. TFA truly helped me “find my fire within”.
